DNA copy number calculator

Convert a mass of double-stranded DNA into number of molecules, for qPCR standards and template input.

Example: a 3 kb plasmid

–
copies = ng × 6.022×10²³ ÷ (bp × 650 × 10⁹)

How it works

An average base pair of double-stranded DNA weighs about 650 g/mol. Dividing the mass by the molecule's molar mass gives moles, and multiplying by Avogadro's number gives the copy number.
